Why do we want to homestead?

I, like a lot of people, spend a big portion of every day thinking about my future and how I hope to spend it working away on my very own homestead! I hope the future finds us on a rural, large piece of land somewhere where we can have chickens, ducks, cows, pigs, goats, horses and more! I want to be able to provide all of our own meat for our family through animal husbandry, I want to grow a lot of our own food and veggies by gardening year round and preserving foods in many different ways. This type of lifestyle used to be the norm for everyone and then it seemed to skip a generation and now my generation, those of us in our 30s, are looking back to things our parents didn't teach us but we know or remember our grandparents doing. The chaos of the world and society in itself is pushing and urging us to go back to our roots and find a way to live a calmer, simpler life, more "unplugged". I want to do that for all of those reasons PLUS I want my now pre-teen boys to grow up as young men who are capable and know how to do all of these things, as if they had lived it their whole lives.
